When a 15 year old boy horrifically murders his childhood best friend rocking a sleepy Pennsylvania town to its core, a complex web of trauma, abuse, and neglect come to light in this riveting true crime saga that exposes the dark underbelly lurking beneath small town America’s idyllic facade.
With a population of less than 8,000, Milton’s only claim to fame is being the birthplace of canned food giant, Chef Boyardee. That is until one of the most violent murders in American History rocked the town to its core. It was 1993, when fifteen year old Norman Gundrum Jr., stabbed his best friend, Bobby Coup, more than 63 times, only stopping to ask, “are you dead yet?” Gundrum, who claims to have blacked out at the time of the murder said that Coup along with a few other men had sexually abused him earlier that evening, and when Coup tried once more he attacked him in a fit of rage. At the time, if given the death penalty, Gundrum would have been the youngest defendant in Pennsylvania history to receive the death penalty for his crime. However, as the trial unfolded a story of neglect, sexual abuse and trauma came to light. Gundrum claimed he had been abused by over two dozen men since he was 8 years old, faced endless bullying, and was even left to starve by his own family. Ultimately Gundrum was convicted of first-degree murder, avoiding the death penalty and sentenced as an adult to life in prison without parole. While in prison, Gundrum built up a support system. He became devoted to his faith and earned his associate’s degree. The victim’s family even forgave Gundrum, who set up a scholarship fund in memory of their fallen son. The unprecedented support for the admitted killer comes in part from the book “Are You Dead Yet” by Shane Homan, which tells Gundrum’s story largely through a package of letters written to and from his grandmother. Who was really to blame? Did small town America fail these young men and how would it reconcile with the revelations moving forward? What really happened that night and could it have been prevented?
