Tackling History: The AFL Story is a docu-series exploring the rise of the AFL and the Black players that contributed to creating the greatest rival the NFL has ever seen. Featuring current and former NFL stars alongside AFL legends, we look back on the legacy, the history and the impact that this long forgotten league has left on the game of football and beyond; paving the way for the next generation of superstars.
The impact black football players had on the early days of American Football is undeniable. The foundation that they built in the American Football League, contributing to it becoming a legitimate rival to the NFL and forcing a merger, whose impact reverberates throughout the league to this day, was just the beginning. They opened doors, shed tackles and paved the way for the next generation of athletes. Yet, their story and legacy is largely lost or unknown to the current generation of NFL Players and fans. It is our goal to tell those stories through the lens of the current and former NFL players as they embark on a journey of discovery. With the support of the NFL and NFLPA, we will examine how race, politics and sport intersected and impacted football and society at large to create the game we know and love today. Each episode will examine not only the influence and impact these former AFL players had on the modern day game, but also highlight their contributions off the field as well. Exploring fashion, culture, the fight for inclusion, civil rights, crossovers into acting/entertainment and beyond. We will sit down with AFL legends Willie Lanier Sr., Bobby Bell, Joe Namath, Doug Willaims, Bruce Smithand more to tackle the early days of American football as well as catch up with current NFL Players such as Saquon Barkley, Patrick Mahomes, Colin Kaepernick, Jalen Hurtsas they learn about and experience the legacy of those that came before. Through unscripted interviews, highly stylized animation, archival videos and photos along with live action footage of modern day NFL Players on and off the field, we will tell the nuanced story of how this group of players changed the game as well as American society and culture forever.
